5.0 out of 5 stars Resveratrol may help pre-diabetics and newly diagnosed diabetics (type 2) (like me)

    L. · March 7, 2017

This is a long story so here is the executive summary: I am a diabetic (mild, newly diagnosed) on the anti-inflammatory diet. I take lots of supplements so it's a bit hard to figure out what is happening. I started taking resveratrol (blood glucose goes down), stopped the resveratrol (glucose goes up), started again (glucose goes down). Conclusion, resveratrol is lowering my blood glucose. Read on if you are interested in the full story.Update: Recently, I decided I would claim back some of my freezer space and purchased powdered grape skins USDA Organic Grape Skin Extract / Powder (2 PACK) - 100 grams (3.5 oz). I mixed the grape skin with the bulk supplements resveratrol 1:1 and encapsulated the mixture using the Capsule Machine (Bulk Supplements sells this on their website but not on Bolo). I was freed from making smoothies just so I could dump in supplements. Now with all previous resveratrol supplementation from every company, my blood glucose readings would drop down about 10 units from what I expected. But, suddenly with the switch to the powdered grape skin plus resveratrol, a week later, it's consistently reading about 35 units below what I would have predicted. I was shocked. What could have happened?Did I take extra supplements and just forgot about doing it?Is it the Gymnema tea which is so effective? Maybe I'm mixing up the Gymnema with my regular tea?Did the "Eat Fat, Get Thin" Diet by Mark Hyman finally kick in and my insulin resistance went away? Seems unlikely although this has happened as reported in the clinical literature.Or did the high concentration of grape skin compounds enhance resveratrol absorption beyond standard formulations? The number of reads is enough to say *something* is really working. At some point I'm sure I will need to stop the resveratrol & grape skin combo and figure this out. But eat more grapes with your resveratrol. After some more experiments, I *think* I've identified the source of the mysterious drop.First, the drop is real. My A1C is 5.1, the lowest it's been since I was diagnosed as a diabetic (about two years)."New supplements" that affect blood glucose. Taurine - I take 1500 mg at night to help me sleep (this is the dose for someone who is bipolar). Taurine, a) controls mania, b) controls stress, c) helps regulate electrolytes (prevents cramping), d) stimulates production of insulin, lowering glucose, 3) might help control seizures (epilepsy). DO NOT TAKE TAURINE IF YOU ARE DEPRESSED!!!! It will make you even more depressed. The sleep/stress control seems to kick in within the first week but everything else takes over a month to kick in.Second, my inflammation flared sky-high and I encapsulated my powdered ginger and garlic and started taking 3 capsules (about 1500 mg or 1 tsp) every day on top of my heavily anti-inflammatory cooking (1/4 cup pepper flakes, 1 head garlic, 1 inch ginger root and some food). Doing this fixed my arthritis pain, I started healing the discs in my spinal column. Then, I went to a medical conference on Restorative Medicine and discovered ginger will lower cholesterol (70 HDL and 70 LDL) and control blood glucose (A1c= 5.1).Could I have erased my insulin resistance via diet? Alas, not yet. If I eat a bowl of popcorn at 10 PM at night, my blood glucose is 130 the next morning.End update.ConsumerLabs.com tested the BulkSupplements Resveratrol and it was selected as one of the top 3 products. It missed #1 only because it did not contain any of the compounds that are needed to make resveratrol bioavailable. I usually blend the resveratrol into a smoothie and keep a supply of frozen grapes. Adding 3-4 grapes does the trick. Get the thick skinned grapes; they have extra compounds.I used to drink red wine and eat peanuts (both loaded with resveratrol) unstoppably. Then I went on the anti-inflammatory diet and ate a lot of anti-inflammatory foods and supplements. It's hard to tease out what the impact of any one supplement might be. Hot peppers are a powerful anti-inflammatory. I started with 3 peppers per day. 3 days after I started, I discovered I'd lost all my cravings for food. I didn't have any desire for ice cream, potato chips, cookies, peanuts, red wine, chocolate.... nothing. Later, I found several articles: one stated "hot peppers regulate the appetite" which explains the lost cravings. And another explained peanuts and red wine contain resveratrol which might explain why these were "hot" foods for me. As, an aside, calcium may regulate the appetite as well, but I've supplemented calcium for decades and it didn't do anything.I figured, I better replace the lost resveratrol and started with the Dr's Best. From the Oct. 8, 2016 ConsumerLabs report. Dr's. Best passed the purity test, it contained the stated type and amount of ingredients. It's a good product. On the other hand, there are many good products and 3 were singled out as cheaper (with caveats): Shoprite ( $0.10 per pill), BulkSupplements.com Resveratrol $0.09 per 100mg serving and Costco TruNature 250 mg - $0.14 per serving. The Costco resveratrol also contains green tea extract - equivalent to one cup of weak tea.Consumer Labs was unable to pinpoint clear cut clinical evidence to take resveratrol.Lower blood pressure - some early diagnostics that flow might be improving but did not translate into lower blood pressureLowers cholesterol - a combination of resveratrol and grapeseed extract was used in a preliminary study of cholesterol levels - the combination did lower cholesterol. Note, high levels of resveratrol (many hundreds of milligrams to grams ) may affect statin and other cardiovascular drug levels.Resveratrol may thin your blood.Resveratrol *may* help control glucose levels in new diabeticsOne very small study showed, 200 mg Resveratrol and 320 mg quercetin (split into two doses and taken with meals) on healthy overweight middle - older patients show improvement in blood glucose levels and MEMORY after 26 weeks. There is a lead suggesting resveratrol could help with age-related macular degeneration. Further studies needed. There are more leads suggesting resveratrol could help cancer patients. High need for more studies.Whatever, you do, don't take higher doses of resveratrol, thinking more is better. This has been shown to *increase* your bad cholesterol.Note: Bulksupplements resveratrol is a fine white powder which will choke you unless it is well-dissolved. Finally, 200mg is 1/8 of a teaspoon. The powder is not well behaved. It really helps to have a tiny measuring spoon or a scale. You will need 0.001 resolution. It took me a while to order the next batch of resveratrol and during that time my glucose readings mysteriously rose. There were times when I expected my glucose readings to be below 100 but were about 110 or higher instead. Finally, my next batch arrived and within two days my readings went back to the 100 or below zone.I went and read the clinical trial articles on resveratrol and diabetes. Resveratrol has been shown to control blood glucose for newly diagnosed diabetics (I've been diagnosed for about 1.5 years). In a separate study, it has been shown to PREVENT diabetes in pre-diabetics. Every single pre-diabetic who took resveratrol in the clinical trial stayed healthy; many people in the control group developed diabetes (it was a two year study). These are both small but well designed and well run clinical trials. Too small to be definitive but large enough to be a very promising lead. But it's too small to establish safety or long term effectiveness. My recommendation: In normal doses (200mg), resveratrol is unlikely to hurt you (some of the cholesterol studies had larger cohorts). If you are pre-diabetic - TAKE. THE. STUFF. Diabetes is no fun. If you are newly diagnosed, give it a try. If you are not newly diagnosed (as in 10 years), it won't work. Sorry, there was a small but well run clinical trial that demonstrated this sad news. And if you want to change the dosage, I heartily recommend reading the clinical trial literature first.

4.0 out of 5 stars ... my smoothie ingredients through BulkSupplements and I've always been pleased with their products

    T. · March 30, 2016

I haven't tried the resveratrol yet but I almost always buy my smoothie ingredients through BulkSupplements and I've always been pleased with their products. Always fresh, high quality and delivered on a timely manner. The only reason I didn't give this a 5 star rating is because the packaging can be a little messy so you have to be extra careful when opening it. It is bulk products so it is worth the extra care. Would recommend their products to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars For heart health

Better than a bottle of wine to gain the benefit of heart health. Not a drinker so this works for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seems good

    A. · July 26, 2024

Quick shipping. Starting to sell in Canada. Their web site is a bit quarcky. But they are adding more supplements every day. Good prices. Gotta pay shipping but still a bit cheaper than others. Haven't taken any yet.

1.0 out of 5 stars So far nothing!

    m. · December 18, 2024

The study I read used 150mg/kg/day, too much for me to use with the cost of this product. I used 1/2 tsp/day. I didn't see a decrease in my blood sugar, weight, just nothing.I've been joyfully surprised by an occasional supplement but it's rare and this isn't one of them.Perhaps it works for some people and not others. I find cinnamon works well for my blood sugar, I just need something extra to get it all the way down, and yes I am also using diet and exercise as part of that.
