The Boost Spelling Skills series provides strategies to improve primary school pupils’ spelling skills, making them more confident readers and writers.
Teaching children to spell is essential if we want them to become confident writers. Good spellers can write more fluently, as they don’t have to pause to consider how each word should be spelt. Furthermore, children with good spelling skills are more likely to make adventurous vocabulary choices and be better at reading.
Boost Spelling Skills 1 will boost children’s spelling skills by providing them with useful strategies to help them spell and read unfamiliar words. It is designed for use from Year 2 and beyond with children who are struggling with spelling.
The book follows the Letters and Sounds guidelines for Phases 2-6. It explores high frequency keywords, specific letter patterns, prefixes, suffix endings and introduces ten key spelling rules.
The strategies covered include:
- Breaking down words into syllables
- Learning memory joggers for irregularly spelt keywords
- Using rhyming patterns to link known words to those that may not be familiar (this helps pupils realise that words which share a common sound-end pattern often have same letter sequence too).
Boost Spelling Skills 1 contains structured spelling lists of target words, reading activities and pupil worksheets, each connected to specific letter patterns, prefixes and suffixes. Dictation exercises provide an opportunity for support, reinforcement and consolidation.
